Dongfang Electric releases nine green and low-carbon technologies, including solar thermal power generation, presenting a strong answer to innovation-driven development!

On May 10, Dongfang Electric held its Green and Low-Carbon Technology Launch Conference in Deyang, Sichuan.
At the event, the company unveiled a series of industry-leading green and low-carbon technologies, breakthrough achievements, and application scenarios to users worldwide, presenting its latest response to the call for innovation-driven development.

Wang Jun, Member of the Party Leadership Group and Vice President of Dongfang Electric Corporation, delivered the opening speech. He emphasized that as a national leader in energy equipment manufacturing, Dongfang Electric remains committed to serving national strategies and embracing its mission in this era. By aligning closely with the development needs of a new energy system, the company is deepening the implementation of its “Leadership Strategy” and the “11256” development roadmap. It continues to pursue high-end, intelligent, and green development, fostering new quality productivity to contribute to China’s energy transition and the building of an energy powerhouse.

During the conference, Dongfang Electric released several green and innovative products, technologies, and solutions, including:

  • Ultra-large-capacity offshore wind turbines,

  • A fully independently developed lineup of heavy-duty gas turbine technologies,

  • Pumped-storage hydropower systems,

  • Concentrated solar thermal power (CSP) technology,

  • Intelligent ultra-deep drilling and well-completion equipment and technology,

  • Dongfang’s new-generation coal power technology for future power systems,

  • A 700MW circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler and its applications,

  • Green and low-carbon power plant (or industrial park) solutions,

  • Smart product systems for coal-fired power units.

These innovations reflect Dongfang Electric’s ongoing commitment to sustainable, low-carbon, and intelligent energy development.

1. Dongfang Electric’s Ultra-Large-Capacity Offshore Wind Turbine

Dongfang Electric has independently developed a 26 MW-class offshore wind turbine, currently the largest single-unit capacity and the longest rotor diameter among fully domestically produced offshore wind turbines globally. This turbine features exceptional typhoon resistance, high safety and reliability, and outstanding power generation performance. Under wind conditions of 10 m/s, it can achieve more than 4,000 full-load hours annually, generating up to 100 million kWh of clean electricity each year.

2. Dongfang Electric’s Fully Independent Heavy-Duty Gas Turbine Technology

Dongfang Electric has independently developed the G50—a 50 MW heavy-duty gas turbine—which is China’s first F-class gas turbine with fully independent intellectual property rights. This milestone represents a major breakthrough for China in the field of high-end energy equipment. The G50 is suitable for applications such as industrial parks and urban combined heat and power (CHP) systems. A single unit can generate over 70,000 kWh of electricity per hour, enough to meet the daily electricity needs of 7,000 households, and can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 500,000 tons annually. The unit has already accumulated over 8,000 hours of operation.

3. Dongfang Electric’s Pumped Storage Industry

Dongfang Electric has fully mastered the complete set of core technologies for pumped storage units and has established a comprehensive technical system for pumped storage solutions. The company has developed a new design concept that integrates high hydraulic stability, high structural reliability, and high operational adaptability. Key innovations include upgrades in hydraulic performance R&D, structural rigidity and fatigue resistance evaluation, and generator-motor electrical performance analysis. Dongfang Electric has built a “three highs and one wide” technology system tailored to the needs of the new power system—characterized by high stability, high reliability, high adaptability, and wide applicability. Supported by intelligent manufacturing and digital factory infrastructure, the company’s annual production capacity for pumped storage units is expected to reach 50 sets, totaling over 15 million kilowatts.

4. Dongfang Electric Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) Technology

Dongfang Electric focuses on the development of tower-type concentrated solar power (CSP) technology and possesses full industrial chain capabilities, including solar field concentrating and heat collection, thermal energy storage and exchange systems, steam turbines, and generators. The company has developed an advanced CSP technology system with distinctive Dongfang characteristics.

With outstanding system solutions and highly efficient, reliable products, Dongfang Electric has been deeply involved in over 20 CSP projects, including China’s first batch of demonstration projects: the Hami 50 MW CSP project, the Aksai 110 MW “CSP + PV” hybrid project, the 100 MW Gonghe desert-base project, and the 100 MW CSP project in Amdo, Tibet — the highest-altitude CSP plant in the world. Dongfang Electric continues to lead the commercialization of CSP technologies.

5. Dongfang Electric 10,000-Meter Deep Intelligent Drilling and Completion Equipment

Dongfang Electric possesses world-leading capabilities in the development of oil and gas exploration and production equipment as well as in providing integrated drilling engineering services. It is a global pioneer in the electrification of fracturing equipment and services.

The company independently developed the world’s first 12,000-meter ultra-deep intelligent drilling rig, achieving a breakthrough in “one-click coordinated operation” automation and full domestic production across the entire system. Centered around the “Dream” deep-sea drilling platform, Dongfang Electric has established a deep-sea drilling equipment system, overcoming technical challenges such as dynamic derrick design and fully automated mud processing. These advancements significantly accelerate the industrialization of natural gas hydrate exploration and development.

6. Dongfang Electric’s New Generation Coal Power Technology for Advanced Power Systems

Dongfang Electric has achieved breakthrough progress in clean carbon reduction, safety and reliability, flexible regulation, and intelligent operation for coal-fired power generation.

In boiler technology, the newly designed “slim and tall” furnace structure offers enhanced flame stability and improved hydraulic safety. It incorporates dual-swirl pulverized coal burners and advanced pulverized coal airflow pre-separation technology, enabling ultra-low load stable combustion.

In turbine technology, breakthroughs have overcome partial load cycle efficiency bottlenecks, enabling deep load following and start-stop load regulation capabilities, while addressing the issue of water erosion in the turbine’s last-stage blades during deep load following.

In generator technology, core components are produced using digital intelligent manufacturing processes to ensure reliability. The intelligent diagnostic system supports equipment evaluation, maintenance planning, and assists users in operational decision-making.

7. Dongfang Electric’s 700 MW High-Efficiency Ultra-Supercritical Circulating Fluidized Bed Boiler Technology

Dongfang Electric independently developed the 700 MW high-efficiency ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler, currently the largest capacity, highest parameter, and most advanced CFB boiler in operation. Successfully applied in the Honghe project in Yunnan, it overcomes challenges posed by high parameters, large capacity, high altitude, and high-moisture, low-calorific-value lignite. This technology boosts unit thermal efficiency to 46.5%, saves over 175,000 tons of standard coal annually, and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 500,000 tons per year, driving the low-carbon and clean transformation of China’s energy structure.

8. Dongfang Electric’s Green Low-Carbon Power Plant (Park) Solutions

Dongfang Electric aligns closely with national strategic demands and has made key breakthroughs in comprehensive energy-saving and efficiency improvement upgrades, flexible and efficient retrofits, and low-carbon transformation technologies for the three main units and various systems of traditional coal-fired power plants. The unit parameter upgrade and cross-generation retrofit significantly improve the unit’s cycle efficiency. The coal-fired units integrate a flue gas and steam-heated molten salt system, reducing irreversible heat exchange losses. A bypass flue is added at the boiler tail to divert flue gas, combined with main steam heating of molten salt and thermal storage systems, achieving an equivalent cycle efficiency exceeding 85%.

9. Dongfang Electric’s Intelligent Products for Coal-Fired Power Units

Dongfang Electric has independently developed intelligent products for power units, applied in dozens of power plants and covering units ranging from 300 MW to 1,000 MW, including coal-fired main units and nuclear power conventional island turbine-generator units. Based on user requirements, dozens of system functional modules for the main units have been developed, including intelligent equipment health management, unit operation optimization, and intelligent operation and maintenance. These products provide operational safeguards such as prevention of misoperation, fault localization, early warning, fault diagnosis, maintenance recommendations, and operational guidance.
